Hello, colleagues,
With this article, we would like to open an entire series aimed at explaining individual components of AVCAD — and how to use them to create the most accurate drawings that contain all the information necessary for the successful completion of a project.
Today, we’d like to talk about Equipment Assignments and Device Assignments.
1) Equipment Assignments
Equipment Assignments are a tool that allows you to add any information to a drawing that you want to include in the engineering specification.
Here are several examples of where this might be useful:
-
Counting RJ45, XLR, BNC, TRS, or optical connectors such as LC, SC, and so on
-
Counting rack blank panels
-
Counting various assembly components for the project, such as cable ties or BNC screwdrivers
-
Counting cables that don’t require special manufacturer orders, such as standard HDMI cables of 2 m, 3 m, or 5 m
You can assign any number of equipment assignments to any entity on the drawing.
Please note that it’s sometimes convenient to create different assignments for the same type of element. For example, you can create one assignment with two RJ45 connectors and another with one RJ45 connector.
The first is ideal when both ends of a cable need to be terminated, while the second is suitable when only one end of the cable requires a connector — for instance, when the other end is plugged directly into a device or panel, or when the cable is a pigtail.
As a result, you can build a list of assignments similar to the one shown below.(image 1)

They are created using the dedicated Equipment Assignment tool, and you can find detailed instructions on how to use it in our training videos on YouTube. All links are provided at the end of the article.
In the end, a schematic that consists of just two devices and a small rack….(image 2)

…gives us a specification like this.(image 3)

The list of all Equipment Assignments — along with the ability to see where each of them is used — can be found in the plugin Schemes Manager → Assignments.
2) Device Assignments
However, in some cases, the functionality of Equipment Assignments is not the most convenient solution. This applies to situations where it’s important to specify the manufacturer and model of a component.
Examples include:
-
Specific cables, such as Extron HDMI Ultra/6 26-663-06 or Extron HD Pro P/150 26-726-150
-
Specific connectors, such as Neutrik NAC3FXXA-W-S or Neutrik NO2MW-XP
Thus, a seemingly simple schematic…(image 4)

…provides us with a specification like this.(image 5)

3. Planned Improvements
-
Moving Equipment Assignments to an SQLite database, along with other parameters
-
Enabling more flexible use of assignment text on the drawing
-
